Appropriately, this week I have had several conversations about the Leap Year and, in particular, babies born on February 29th.
Pirates ARRR! cool.
Each time this topic comes up, I have shared my affinity for The Pirates of Penzance, a comedic opera by W. S. Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan, also famous for The Mikado and H.M.S. Pinafore (Few people know this, but I was in a Middle School rendition of The Mikado).

The Pirates of Penzance tells the story of a young pirate named Frederic who has come to the end of his apprenticeship. It seems that Frederic was indentured as a child by mistake. His nurse had been instructed by his father to apprentice him to a "pilot," not a “pirate.” When this error is discovered, Frederic decides to leave piracy and wishes to devote his life to the extermination of their kind. Through all of this, Frederic falls in love with a beautiful young lady named Mabel, whom he wishes to marry. However, Frederic learns that, due to a technicality (being born on February 29th he has only really had 5 birthdays), he is still indentured to the pirates, and in true Gilbert and Sullivan fashion complications ensue.

Congratulations to LuxuryRealEstate.com staff members Michael Edlund (Director of Technology), Jean-Yves Piton (Global Membership Manager) and Dustin Secrest (Lead Front-End Developer) and their families. Amazingly from our staff of just 39 people, today we welcome three Leap Year Babies – Emil, Nicolas and Ezra.

Pirates of Penzance. Now I have another play I need to see. Anyway, this is truly a unique time for us to see three of our LuxuryRealEstate.com staff members welcome newborns into their lives on such a distinct day. Congratulations to all of them.

March 4, 2008 Update: You can read an article about this wonderful story in the
Seattle Post-Intelligencer.

At Luxury Real Estate, we do not only produce the most-viewed luxury real estate website in the world, LuxuryRealEstate.com, we also produce award-winning websites for our clients. Over the last three weeks we have launched three websites that are as distinct as the companies they represent: MiamiRealEstate.com, EwingandClark.com, and TheFloridaAuthority.com.

Each website has had its own challenges. But I think the biggest challenge is trying to launch the site. There is a fear to launch a new website. It is a huge change and naturally a time for stress.

I find it ironic that three people in our Web department are also expecting children: Michael, Dustin and Eric. I know how tough it is for our clients to adapt to the change of a website. I can only imagine how our lucky fathers are going to adapt to having a newborn. Good luck to them all.

And you thought this post was going to be about websites, didn’t you?

As a Technical Account Manager with LuxuryRealEstate.com, Joey Pauley helps members with their Web and technology needs. He does a phenomenal job in all of his projects, as you can see by visiting the many websites he has helped design. What a wonderful analogy Joey has given us. Bringing forth these new websites, with all their inherent stress and relief, is an experience very much like parenthood. Everyone in our web department has had three children this month, I suppose.
