The historic Hotel del Coronado is celebrating its 125th Anniversary in 2013. In commemoration of this remarkable feat, the Del is rolling out some amazing package deals to entice guests to come experience the landmark achievement. The 125th Anniversary package includes a copy of the Del’s brand-new book entitled, “Hotel del Coronado History” (http://hoteldel.com/promotional-packages.aspx).
The expansive red-roofed towers and infamous turret were conceived by two mid-western businessmen by the names of Elisha Babcock and Hampton Story. The men purchased Coronado in its entirety in 1885 and proceeded to plan the construction of the resort that they believed would be the “talk of the Western world.” The Reed Brothers were hired as the main architects for the monumental project of designing the Del’s turret, which would stand almost ten stories tall and would eventually be featured on navigation charts, serving as a nautical and aeronautical landmark.
Construction began in March 1887 and only 11 months later, the Hotel del Coronado opened its doors to the public on February 19, 1888. Offering amenities such as athletic sporting activities and designated rooms for quieter activities such as reading and writing; the hotel also boasted modern technology that included electricity, telephones, elevators, open air cafes and Turkish baths.
The opening of Tent City in the early 1900’s welcomed the middle class to enjoy a different aspect of the Hotel del Coronado. Tent City was located on the hotel’s property and consisted of tents fashioned like bungalows and were offered at reasonable prices.
The Roaring Twenties were the beginning of the continuous flow of celebrities at the Del. Guests ranged from Marilyn Monroe to Charlie Chaplin, England’s Prince of Wales to Lyndon Johnson and every U.S. President since, the list goes on and on.
World War II began and the Del opened its doors for Navy housing due to the spike in recruits. The turret also became a viable lookout point for armed sentries to effectively patrol the beaches. Military men formed a strong attachment to the whimsical beach resort and brought their significant others to experience the Victorian marvel. Military weddings became a frequent occurrence on the white sands of the resort’s beach, with the Hotel del Coronado setting the perfect backdrop.
The Del celebrated its 120th Anniversary with the unveiling of Beach Village, the private enclave of the Hotel del Coronado consisting of oceanfront Cottages and Villas. Beach Village’s red-shingled roof and white painted lap siding compliment the classic look of the famous Hotel Del. A Hotel del Coronado press release perfectly describes the insides of these luxurious Cottages and Villas.
“White-paneled wainscoting and painted cabinetry provide a crisp contrast to wide-plank walnut wood flooring in the living areas. Oversized baths are enhanced with white Calcutta marble on the floors, shower walls and tub decks and sparkling chrome fixtures accenting the stone. Custom-made vanities are crafted with ebony mahogany and emperador dark marble tops. Throughout the interiors, the furniture selection is transitional with a hint of cottage style provided by blue textured linen upholstery and fresh striped linen draperies. Seen as a whole, every element of the décor blends harmoniously, creating the feeling of a California beach bungalow that opens to the ocean.” (http://hoteldel.com/PressReleaseTemplate.aspx?id=424)
These luxurious Cottages and Villas that comprise Beach Village are offered as ownership opportunities. Each 3 bedroom, 3 bathroom Cottage and 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom Villa are whole ownership, limited use condominiums and completely sold out when Beach Village launched in 2006. Owners can enjoy the amenities Beach Village offers such as private pools and hot tubs, gated access to the beach, personalized concierge service and breakfast and cocktails at the Windsor Club Cottage, which sits next to Windsor Lawn and boasts unobstructed ocean views. Along with access to the amenities of Beach Village, owners have access to the amenities of the entire world class resort. These amenities include the Spa at the Del, fitness center, shops and a variety of restaurants and bars located in the hotel.
Owners have access to their Cottage or Villa up to 90 days per year (maximum of 25 days in any 50-day consecutive period). Owners have the option to give their days to friends or family who would like to stay, contribute them to a charity auction or not use them and let the hotel fill the rooms for substantial revenue.
There are currently four Villas available for purchase at Beach Village at the Del. Villa 19 is on the first floor and is handicapped accessible. Villa 11 is on the first floor, is on the corner of the Villas and is conveniently located across the way from an Adults Only pool. Villa 26 is on the first floor and is located by the main pool, which boasts a bar and private cabanas. Lastly, Villa 28 is on the second floor and has an expansive balcony that overlooks Beach Village. All of these Villas have endless ocean views.
